PDP postpones screening of aspirants for 2025 National Convention — Report

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has announced a delay in the screening of aspirants for its 2025 Elective National Convention, which was originally slated for Tuesday, October 28, 2025.

In a statement released on Monday by the Chairman of the National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC) and Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri, the party explained that the postponement was due to “unforeseen circumstances.”

Fintiri stated that a fresh date for the exercise would be announced soon and assured all aspirants and members that the committee regrets any inconvenience the change might have caused.

“A new date will be communicated once fixed. The NCOC regrets any inconvenience caused by the postponement.

“All aspirants and members of our Party should note the foregoing and be guided accordingly,” the statement added.

He further reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to ensuring a transparent, credible, and seamless national convention.

The PDP’s 2025 Elective National Convention was earlier scheduled for November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

On October 25, 2025, the PDP had announced a 13-member National Convention Screening Committee responsible for vetting aspirants for various national positions ahead of the convention.

The committee, chaired by former Ondo State governorship candidate and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Eyitayo Jegede, SAN, was scheduled to conduct the screening on Tuesday, October 28, 2025.

The postponement was announced shortly after former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, declared his intention to run for the office of the national chairman.

This development followed earlier reports that northern PDP leaders had endorsed former Minister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, as their consensus candidate for the chairmanship seat.

However, several factions within the party, including those loyal to Lamido and another prominent leader, Nyesom Wike, had opposed Turaki’s endorsement, citing inadequate consultation.

The disagreement highlights the rising tension in the party, which in recent months has witnessed notable resignations among its ranks.
