THE Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced the cancellation of central May Day celebrations in Rivers and Edo states, citing the imposition of emergency rule in Rivers and alleged political meddling in Edo.

In separate letters dated April 22 and signed by Deputy General Secretary Ismail Bello, the NLC directed its affiliates in both states to mark May Day independently at their respective union secretariats, rather than through public parades or joint state events.

Rivers State: Protest, Not Parade

In its letter to Rivers State NLC Chairman, Alex Agwanwor, the Congress said this year’s Workers’ Day under the theme “Reclaiming the Civic Space in the Midst of Economic Hardship” must reflect on the erosion of democracy, particularly the appointment of a sole administrator in place of an elected government.

The NLC instructed affiliates in Rivers to hold a peaceful rally at the state NLC secretariat with messages supporting democratic governance and workers’ welfare. Sources confirm that the Trade Union Congress (TUC) is expected to join in solidarity.

Edo State: Independence Amid Crisis

In Edo, where the NLC has been embroiled in leadership disputes allegedly worsened by government interference, the national body directed affiliates to organize celebrations independently.

In a follow-up statement dated April 26, Bello reaffirmed that there is no officially recognized “Acting State Secretary” in Edo. He dismissed a circulating directive, allegedly issued by an impostor, calling workers to attend a government-led parade on May 1.

The NLC reiterated that workers are not obligated to attend any government-organized events and warned against threats of sanctions, stressing the independence of trade unions.
