Nnamdi Kanu Now In DSS Custody After Medical Check-Up

VAM News Update

THE leader of the separatist Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu was returned to the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) on Sunday.

This followed his release on Saturday for a consultation with his personal physician, as directed by a Federal High Court in Abuja on July 20.

The court dismissed DSS objections, granting Kanu’s medical access due to a suspected ear infection that might require surgery.

Ifeanyi Ejiofor, Kanu’s counsel, confirmed the development in a phone conversation with Punch.

He reported that Kanu, detained since 2021, had been examined by his personal physicians and then taken back into DSS custody.

Ejiofor had previously informed, via a tweet, that Kanu’s medical examination took place in a hospital in Abuja, away from DSS facilities.

The lawyer, who was present during the consultation, described it as “seamless and productive”, and indicated that the next stage would follow soon.

He wrote, “Sequel to our avowed assurance to always keep Ezigbo UmuChineke abreast of pertinent happenings, especially with Onyendu’s health status, welfare, and update on his legal matters, we are pleased to inform you that Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu met with his choice personal physician yesterday in a hospital in Abuja, outside the facility of the State Security Service.

“As part of the protocol, I witnessed the consultation. The medical examination was seamless and productive, and he will be progressing to the next stage soon.”
