Senator Akinyelure resign from PDP

VOICE AIR MEDIA News Update

Barely 11 days to the expiration of the 10th Senate, Senators Matthew Urhoghide (Edo South) and Ayo Akinyelure (Ondo Central) on Wednesday dumped their political platform, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Urhoghide and Akinyelure, who announced their resignation during plenary, however did not announce the party they will defect to.

The Senators’ notices of resignation were contained in separate letters read by Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege who presided over the plenary.

Though Urhoghide and Akinyelure were silent on the party they will join henceforth, the Deputy Senate President who read the letters urged them to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

While Urhoghide said his resignation took immediate effect, Akinyelure said his resignation will take effect from June 11, 2023 after expiration of his third term in the Senate.

Urhoghide, who is the Chairman of Senate Committee on Public Accounts said he is resigning from the PDP because of the division among leaders of the party.

He claimed that the differences would not allow him to grow politically if he continued to stay as a member of the party.

He appreciated the leadership of the PDP for giving him the political platform to contest and win elections that had brought him to the Senate.

Urhoghide’s letter reads in part:

“It will be difficult for someone like me to grow and function as a leader. I am grateful to the party for giving me the platform.”

In his letter, Akinyelure, who is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions noted that he wished leaders of the PDP best of luck in their future endeavours.
