Citation (2020): Movie Review

Plot: A bright student in Nigeria takes on the academic establishment when she reports a popular professor who tried to rape her.

Review: Citation is a respectable film about Moremi, a bright young Master’s student, and a somber drama about sexual assault on college campuses that is supposedly based on real incidents.

The narrative revolves around Moremi, an intelligent and tenacious college student who accuses renowned professor Lucien N’Dyare of sexual assault. As university authorities listen to testimony from Moremi, N’Dyare, and other witnesses and advocates, much of the ensuing drama plays out as an unsettling tribunal.

Since the trial swiftly turns into a he-said-she-said exchange, Moremi’s accusations aren’t precisely taken seriously from the beginning. The full nature of Moremi’s experience is revealed through flashbacks that depict her life and community, bringing to light the various nuances of her claim. It is obvious that N’Dyare, a professor who is admired and held in great regard by his pupils, is at fault.

When Moremi agreed to teach her professor how to drive a car with a manual gearbox after he claimed he didn’t know how to, their relationship started innocently. Their relationship shifts into a more unsettling phase after that seemingly benign conversation, which triggers an unplanned field trip to Senegal.

Meanwhile, Koyejo, a medical student, and Moremi’s romantic connection go from sweet to tense as he struggles with the professor’s influence on her life and she becomes more unsure of her alternatives.

HITS: The film’s excellent use of French and English gives it a pan-West African and Francophone appeal. And let’s not forget Seun Kuti’s brief yet unforgettable Afrobeat performance, which is essentially the cherry on top.
