Leaders of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, NATO, have approved the deployment of four additional battle groups in Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Slovakia at their summit on Thursday.
The United States Ambassador to NATO, Julie Smith, stated this on Wednesday ahead of NATOâs summit on Thursday, March 24.
Smith said forces from different NATO members would be deployed to the Eastern European countries to counter Russian aggression in Europe.
She said they are ânot just national forces,â saying additional details would be shared.
Speaking at an Atlantic Council event, Smith said NATO is in discussions about its medium- and long-term force presence in its eastern flank.
âWeâre going to have to make a series of ongoing assessment about our force posture that will take us weeks and months into the future,â she said, noting âitâs still an open questionâ of how the alliance takes the NATO-Russia Founding Act â which NATO allies believe Russia is âin clear violation ofâ â and moves to its longer-term posture.
âAll options are on the table,â including permanent basing, she said.
Smith claimed Polandâs proposal of a NATO peacekeeping mission for Ukraine isnât âdead in the water,â but said there are âa lot of open-ended questionsâ and âallies want to know more about what Poland is suggesting here.â
âWe want to encourage this type of fresh thinking,â she said. âNo one ever shirks or turns away when an ally brings an idea into our discussions here.â
Voice Air Media recalls how Russia sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine on February 24, 2022, in an alleged effort to degrade the military capability of its Southern neighbour and root out people it called dangerous nationalists.
