There is no doubt that Nigeria has produced great men of God with the anointing of the Holy Ghost over the years. Great pastors like the late Apostle Joseph Ayo Babalola, Bishop Benson Idahosa, Prophet Moses Orimolade, Pa Akindayomi, and Prophet Timothy Obadare among others, VAM News reports.
Aside these departed great men of God, however, there are also living legends of faith like Pastor Enoch Adeboye, Pastor W F Kumuyi, Bishop David Oyedepo, and Dr. D. K. Olukoya among others.
But another wonderful man of God emerging in the country and worthy of watching is the General Overseer of God’s Mercy Revival Ministries (GOMERM), Dr. James Akanbi.
Dr. Akanbi, who has degrees in secular and theological education, left his successful accounting career when he was called by God into full-time ministry in 1999 to start God’s Mercy Revival Ministries (GOMERM).
According to him, God’s specific instruction and mandate was for him to go and ‘counter the devil’s revival at this end-time’.

Incorporated in 2000, GOMERM, a prophetic and apostolic ministry, has grown from a single church at a rented auditorium along Egbeda-Idimu Road, Lagos, to a ministry with almost 100 branches in Nigeria, UK, USA, Canada, South Africa, Benin Republic, and Gambia.
The headquarters of the church is located at 2/4 Femi Bankole Close, Pab Bus Stop, Ikotun, Lagos.
Through the grace of God upon his life and ministry, the church continues to attract members from diverse ethnic, cultural and professional backgrounds.
The church also has an out-of-city convention place, Mercy Campground, located along Papalanto Road, Ofada, Ogun state, and an in-city Mercy Revival Centre (MRC) located at Ikotun, Lagos, with a capacity to sit thousands of people.
A Pentecostal revivalist, Dr. Akanbi’s ministrations have imparted several thousands of people. Diverse mind-blowing testimonies of healings, deliverance, miracle babies, jobs, promotions, breakthroughs and blessings, are shared during the monthly miracle services of the church and the special revivals where he ministers.
Education
An Accountancy graduate of the Abia State University, Uturu, Dr. Akanbi also has a Bachelor’s Degree in Theology from Life Theological Seminary, Ikorodu, Lagos; Diploma in Business and Industrial Law, University of Lagos; Certificate in Financial Reporting, NNAB Gyttorp, Sweden; and a Doctorate degree in Theology from the Kingsway Christian College and Theological Seminary, Des Moines IOWA, USA.
His most recent academic achievement is the successful completion of a Strategic Leadership course at Harvard University, United States.
Books
A prolific writer, Dr. Akanbi has authored 40 books including the best-selling I shall not marry my Enemy, Bombers of Hell; Anointed Eagle; Unravelling the Mystery of Divine Selection; Kingdom Principles, Kingdom Power; Frustrating Destiny Undertakers, and Daily Pulpit, a highly-sought after devotional with about 100 volumes in print.
Beyond GOMERM, however, Dr Akanbi is also the Apostolic Missioner, Revival Apostolic Network (RAPONET) International, a body which brings Christian leaders and ministers together for apostolic mentorship, counselling, training and spiritual development.
Speaking truth to Power
In addition to his ministerial calling, Dr. Akanbi is one pastor who doesn’t shy away from addressing national issues and speaking truth to power as a prophet when occasions demand it.
In August 2016, he said the country’s currency would exchange 500 Naira to a Dollar with the way Nigeria’s economy was being managed. This would later come to pass barely a year later.
In 2020, when the National Assembly passed the Companies and Allied Matters (CAMA) Bill, which was signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari on August 7, 2020, Dr. Akanbi was one of the church leaders who spoke out strongly on the issue.
In an interview with THE GUARDIAN, he said while no one was against transparency or financial integrity, CAMA is a confirmation of the suspicion which the church has long had about the government looking for means to cow the church.
Home Front
On the home-front, Dr. Akanbi is married to Pastor Deborah Akanbi, a great and amazingly-humble woman of God. Together, they are blessed with two daughters.
Asked during the interview what he counts as his biggest strength, Dr. Akanbi replied: “My strength number one is the mercy of God that is propping me up all the time. My strength number two will be the grace of God that is available for me to tap into. My strength number three is prayer which I hold to be very serious.
“I also hold holiness strongly. It is what I was exposed to at the very foundation of my Christianity. I have seen the wonders of fasting and I hardly can live without it. And then when you look at the dimension of the word of God, having read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation on many occasions, I’m still very much in love with the word. I have loaded myself with so much of scriptures that I may not need the hard copy at times.”
NGO
Through the Akanbi Educational Foundation (AKADUCFO), an NGO which Dr. Akanbi founded with his family, he reaches out to the needy, giving out annual scholarships to brilliant but indigent students.
The Akanbis also run a care programme for widows, offering them both financial and material support.
A Radio Host and Mentor
A warm, hospitable and very friendly man of God, Dr Akanbi is the host of Season of Power and Mercy on MITV, and Voice of Mercy, a radio programme on Eko 89.7 FM every Monday, Wednesday and Friday by 5:55am.
