Anambra youths under the aegis of Youth Assembly of Nigeria (YAN), has condemned the recent spate of killings in the state.

The group on Thursday urged youths to stand against activities that may cause the disruption of the forthcoming governorship election in the state.

The speaker of the assembly, Mr Ikenna Nwobi who addressed journalists in Awka said the group was pained about the recent killings in the state, expressing fear that if it continues, the forthcoming election in the state may be affected.

He said such a situation would also affect the future of the youths, who he claimed have a greater stake in the future of the state.

Nwobi in an address said: “Firstly, I want to introduce this youth group, which is the legislative arms of the youth body. We wish to condemn the wanton destruction of lives and property ahead of the forthcoming Anambra State governorship election.

“It’s indeed very unfortunate that our youths are being used by politicians to destroy the peace that has been existing in the state. Anambra State is a very peaceful state that believes in the mutual coexistence of each other notwithstanding the political affiliation.”

The group described the security situation in the state as being political, adding that the new trend of electoral violence being experienced in Anambra is alien to the culture and tradition of the people.

He reminded the youths of the state that the bright future they seek was already at hand, adding that the election could be an avenue to achieve it. He urged them to shun violence and not destroy the state because of the inordinate desire of the politicians who do not have their interests at heart.
