The National Association of Nigerian Students, South West Zone, and the management of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, have called on the Osun State Police Command to investigate the death of Ayeni Ademiju.

Ademiju was reportedly stabbed last Saturday in Osogbo during the NANS convention. Initial reports claimed he was a student of Osun State Polytechnic.

In separate statements released on Monday, both NANS and the polytechnic said a thorough investigation was needed to establish the true facts of the incident.

The NANS South West Coordinator, Josiah Adeyemo, said information available to the association showed that the incident did not happen within the premises of the convention venue.

“The convention was successfully concluded before information concerning the deceased’s condition and subsequent death began reaching participants and officials who had already left or were leaving the venue,” Adeyemo said.

He urged the police to look into Ademiju’s movements before his death, the people he was with, any previous disputes, and other relevant details that could help unravel what happened.

On its part, the management of Osun State Polytechnic said Ademiju was admitted into the Part-Time programme in 2023 but did not complete his registration.

In a statement signed by the Registrar, Abiodun Oloyede, the school said there was no record of him on the institution’s portal.

“Ayeni Ademiju, who was allegedly stabbed to death at the Joint Campus Council’s election, was admitted into the Part-Time programme in 2023, but he did not complete his studentship registration. There was no evidence of registration which could have enabled him to write examinations,” the statement read.

The school added that he left the institution about three years ago and “should not be described as our student.”

The polytechnic said it was saddened to learn about his death on social media.

As of the time of filing this report, the Osun State Police Command had not released an official statement on the incident.
