Bejide rejects poll result, calls Oyebanji worst governor

The governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the June 20, 2026 Ekiti State election, Dare Bejide, has described Governor Biodun Oyebanji as the worst-performing governor in the state since its creation in 1996.

Bejide made the remark while rejecting the outcome of the poll, alleging widespread vote-buying and electoral irregularities.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had in the early hours of Sunday, June 21, declared Oyebanji of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the election after polling 319,224 votes. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Dr Wole Oluyede, came second with 40,543 votes, while Bejide placed third with 12,872 votes.

The election, conducted across all 16 local government areas of the state, was however tainted by allegations of vote-buying and other malpractices, which were condemned by observers.

Speaking on Arise News Television while reacting to the results, Bejide questioned the legitimacy of Oyebanji’s re-election, insisting the administration had failed to deliver on key governance indicators.

“The governor is the worst in terms of performance since the creation of the state in 1996,” he said.

“I have been around since that time; even those who did better than him did not win a second term.”

He further compared the state’s current revenue profile with that of his time in office as Secretary to the State Government in 2010, noting a significant increase in federal allocations.

“When I was in government in 2010 as the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), our allocation was oscillating between N2 billion and N4 billion. The last allocation of this government was N17 billion,” he said.

According to him, earlier administrations achieved more with less funding, including road construction, water supply, electricity provision, payment of gratuities, and support for traditional institutions.

“This governor has not done any of these. The roads are in a terrible shape, there is no water, no electricity, and kidnapping is everywhere,” he alleged.

He also claimed that some residents had been held in captivity for months without adequate government response.

Bejide maintained that there was no justification for Oyebanji’s victory, insisting the poll was characterised by widespread vote-buying, though he did not provide specific evidence during the interview.
