Regulate Illegal Mining To Avoid Environmental Hazard – Osun Assembly Member Urges Government

 

 

 

The legislator representing Obokun State Constituency in the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewumi Adeyemi, has proposed a state law that will boost effective mining in the state.

 

 

Making the proposal while addressing journalists at the House of Assembly premises in Osogbo, Adeyemi also called for the regulation of artisanal miners in order to keep in check mining activities in the state.

 

 

Disclosing that although mining is in the exclusive legislative list which only the federal government has the power to legislate on, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) legislator noted that the government also had a responsibility to the citizen of the state.

 

 

In his proposal, the lawmaker asked the state government to act fast to save the mining sector in the state by finding ways to secure the welfare of the host communities and avoid environmental hazards due to the illegal gold mining sites.

 

 

According to him, “the activities of local miners should be regulated with adequate rules guiding their activities.

“Even as we commend the state government and the state security outfit, Amotekun in the apprehension of illegal miners in the state, we also call for the immediate intervention of the government in relation to environmental hazards associated with these mining activities.”

 

 

He advocated a workable solution and credible alternative to artisanal mining and the need to properly examine the problem of land degradation which arises as a result of illegal mining noting that if it was left unattended, with time the affected lands will no longer be viable for farming activities.

 

 

This, he maintained, will pose a great threat to the people and to the state economically.

 

 

The lawmaker had addressed the media on the heels of the appearance of Adeyanju Binuyo, the Deputy Chief Of Staff to the Osun State Governor, and also the head of the committee on artisanal miners before the House of Assembly.

 

Of recent, the activities of illegal and artisanal miners have given the state cause for concern as the Osun River has turned brown.

The development, the State Ministry of Environment stated is a result of unregulated mining activities and the washing up of chemicals into the river.
