A Nigerian entrepreneur has shared the story of how he dismissed one of his best-performing employees in order to maintain discipline and protect the culture of his organization.
According to the business owner, the employee was highly skilled and among the most competent members of his team. However, he said the staff member gradually developed an attitude problem because he believed his performance made him indispensable to the company.
The entrepreneur explained that the worker often acted in ways that undermined authority and influenced other employees negatively. This behavior, he said, began creating tension within the organization.
âI realized that because he knew he was very good at his job, he started behaving like the organization could not function without him,â the entrepreneur said.
He noted that he had previously called the employee for several meetings in an attempt to correct the behavior. Although the staff member would improve temporarily, he would soon return to his usual attitude.
Determined not to allow one person to disrupt the workplace, the business owner decided to take action. Instead of dismissing him immediately, he waited for a day when most members of the team were present during a major work event.
On that day, the employee reportedly arrived late and ignored a manager who questioned him about his lateness. According to the entrepreneur, the worker attempted to go straight to work without addressing the issue.
The entrepreneur said he immediately asked the employee to leave the site and informed him that his services were no longer required.
âHe was shocked because he believed he was too valuable to be sacked,â he explained.
The decision sent a strong message to the rest of the staff, the entrepreneur said. He noted that after the incident, employees became more disciplined and cooperative during the event.
âThat event turned out to be one of our best because everyone focused on their responsibilities,â he said.
The entrepreneur added that one of the most important leadership skills in business is the ability to dismiss employees whose behavior threatens the organization.
âAs a rule of thumb, if you cannot sack someone when necessary, you should not hire them,â he advised.
He also emphasized the importance of having backup personnel so that no single employee can hold an organization to ransom.
