THE Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Joash Amupitan on Monday declared that Artificial Intelligence, AI, is not an enemy of democracy.
Amupitan explained that AI machinery has been used globally in the process of election management and in duplicating voters registration.
He disclosed this while speaking at The Beyond The Ballot Summit in Abuja.
According to Amupitan: “Artificial Intelligence, AI, is not an enemy of democracy.
‘Within election management bodies worldwide, machinery process assists in duplicating large voters registries, refining logistics, planning, streamlining data analysis, and improving administrative efficiency.
“However, the rabid democratization of generative AI models has dramatically lowered the barrier to entry for malicious actors, capacities, capabilities that want to require speedy level intelligence resources such as high voice cloning of public figures, hyper realistic synthesis of election officials making false announcements are now assessable at negligible cost. These tools target specific vulnerabilities with distinct timelines.”
Recently, Amupitan had announced the integration of AI into Nigeria’s electoral system ahead of the 2027 general election.
