Madonna University has reportedly expelled some nursing students following a viral video in which they jokingly declared, “No sick o, na Gen Z full hospital.”
The video, which circulated widely on social media, showed the students taking part in a playful recording within a hospital environment. The clip attracted significant attention online, with some people finding it amusing while others criticised the students for their conduct in a professional setting.
What began as a lighthearted social media video has now reportedly taken a serious turn for the students, with their expulsion from the university sparking fresh reactions.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has appealed to Madonna University to reconsider the decision. The students’ body acknowledged that the conduct in the video was inappropriate and did not reflect the level of discipline and professionalism expected of nursing students.
However, NANS argued that expulsion could have consequences far beyond the video itself, noting that the affected students had already invested years, money and effort into their nursing education. The association therefore urged the university to consider a stern warning or another disciplinary measure instead of ending the students’ academic journey.
The development has divided opinion online. While some Nigerians believe the students crossed a line by making such content in a hospital environment, others feel that the punishment is excessive and that they could have been cautioned, suspended or made to face another form of discipline.
For the students involved, what appeared to be a playful moment on social media has now reportedly become a major setback in the nursing careers they had spent years preparing for.
