Ekiti announces date for 2026 Ikogosi Road Race

Posted on August 18, 2026

THE 2026 Ikogosi Road Race will take place on October 31 following official endorsement from Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji, who aims to leverage the event to deepen youth development, grassroots talent discovery, and local economic growth.

Governor Oyebanji’s backing of the 17.5-kilometer race reinforces his administration’s focus on sustainable youth-driven initiatives that foster small business expansion, sports tourism, and regional infrastructure development.

Organizers are building on the successes of the previous edition—which earned international praise for organization, athlete welfare, and prompt prize money disbursements—to deliver an event fully aligned with global athletics standards.

The 17.5km road race is expected to draw about 8,000 runners from Nigeria and abroad, up from roughly 5,000 in 2025.

The event is organised by the Ikogosi Marathon Initiative in collaboration with the Ekiti State Government. Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji has reaffirmed his administration’s support for the race.

Organisers will share ₦30 million in prize money among elite athletes and eligible Ekiti indigene runners. Local runners will have dedicated opportunities within the prize purse alongside the elite field.

The race runs 17.5km from Ilawe-Ekiti to the Ikogosi Warm Springs Resort. The 2025 edition was praised for its organisation, athlete welfare, and prompt payment of prize money.

Beyond the competition, the event is projected to stimulate the local economy, driving patronage for hospitality, transport, catering, and trade sectors, while providing hands-on opportunities for young professionals in event management, media, security, and logistics.

The race serves as a crucial talent identification platform for local runners. Organizers have introduced specific incentives for state indigenes, including a special prize for the top-finishing Ekiti athlete who lands within the overall top 10, aimed at elevating local talent onto national and international stages.

Registration is free and open at www.ikogosimarathon.com.
