Tinubu orders EFCC to lift court freeze on Osun government account

President Bola Tinubu has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to immediately take steps to vacate the court order freezing an account belonging to the Osun State Government.

The President, in a personally signed statement issued on Thursday, said the anti-graft agency should return to court to withdraw the order and discontinue all actions relating to the account.

Tinubu said although he recognised the EFCC’s statutory powers and the fact that the agency acted on a valid court order, he was uncomfortable with the timing of the action.

“I feel deeply embarrassed not by the EFCC’s exercise of its mandate backed by a court order, but by the timing of the agency’s action,” the President said.

He added, “Accordingly, I have directed the EFCC to immediately proceed to the court to vacate the order and discontinue whatever action it has instituted against the Osun State Government in this regard.”

The directive comes amid the controversy generated by the freezing of the state government’s account, an action that has drawn sharp reactions from political stakeholders and the Osun State Government.

The President’s intervention is expected to pave the way for the unfreezing of the account once the EFCC complies with the directive and secures the necessary court approval.
