NAPTIP rescues 17-year-old trafficking victim

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has received and taken custody of a 17-year-old Nigerian girl, an indigene of Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State, in connection with a suspected case of human trafficking. 

 
According to a statement released by the agency, the victim arrived in Nigeria on Sunday, April 26th at approximately 17:00 hours, accompanied by the Charge d’Affaires of the Nigerian Embassy in Monrovia, Ambassador Mrs. R.O Mohammed.

Preliminary information indicates that the victim was deceived and trafficked to Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, for the purpose of sexual exploitation. She reportedly escaped from her traffickers and made her way to Liberia, where she was later assisted to the Nigerian Embassy.” the statement read in part

Upon her arrival at the airport, the Ambassador formally handed over the victim to officials of NAPTIP, who received her for further care, protection, and necessary intervention.

NAPTIP says it has commenced appropriate procedures to support the victim, while investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend all individuals involved in the trafficking network.
