THE All Progressives Congress has confirmed plans to adopt a consensus method in selecting its national leaders at its upcoming convention scheduled for March 27–28, 2026, in Abuja.
The disclosure was made by Mary Ikoku, Assistant Secretary for Media and Publicity of the APC National Convention 2026, during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily.
According to Ikoku, while the party has agreed to use consensus for leadership positions at the convention, a final decision has not been reached on how elective positions will be determined, noting that such decisions often depend on local political realities.
She explained that although consensus remains a preferred approach, it may not be applicable in all cases, especially at the grassroots level where political interests differ.
Ikoku also addressed provisions in the Electoral Act, noting that the law permits consensus and direct primaries for candidate selection, while indirect primaries have been removed. She added that compliance with these provisions requires adequate preparation by political parties.
According to her, parties that struggle with these requirements often do so due to poor planning and lack of readiness ahead of election cycles.
Meanwhile, the APC has commenced screening of aspirants for key positions in its National Working Committee. Among those contesting are Nentawe Yilwatda for National Chairman and Ajibola Basiru for National Secretary.
Several incumbent officials are also seeking to retain their positions, including Dayo Israel, Ali Bukar Dalori, Abdulkarim Abubakar Kana, Mary Alile Idele, and Felix Morka.
The convention is expected to shape the party’s leadership structure ahead of future political engagements.
