Uber Driver Escapes Night Robbery Attempt, Shares Safety Tips for Colleagues

A ride-hailing driver identified on TikTok as Japhlagos 2 has recounted how he narrowly escaped a suspected robbery attack while working late at night, raising fresh concerns about the safety of drivers operating during overnight hours.

 

The driver shared his experience in a video, explaining that the incident occurred during his regular night shift. According to him, his awareness and use of safety tactics helped him detect suspicious activity and avoid what could have been a dangerous encounter.

 

Narrating the incident, he said he deliberately avoided stopping directly at the address provided by the rider. Instead, he parked a few buildings away to observe the surroundings. Moments later, he noticed three men approaching in a suspicious manner.

 

“I saw the way they rushed out and started looking for me. I already calculated their movement and knew they were not safe,” he said.

 

Sensing danger, he quickly drove off. The suspects reportedly chased him and struck his vehicle, damaging part of it, but he managed to escape without injury.

 

The driver noted that this was not his first close encounter, emphasizing that working at night exposes ride-hailing drivers to increased risks.

 

Following the incident, Japhlagos 2 shared several safety tips for fellow drivers:

1. Avoid stopping directly at pickup points at night: Park at a distance to observe anyone approaching.

2. Keep your engine running and doors locked: This allows for a quick escape if necessary.

3. Avoid entering compounds late at night: Driving into gated residences can leave drivers vulnerable and untraceable.

4. Reject offline ride requests: Do not accept trips from individuals who approach without booking through the app.

5. Be cautious of additional passengers: Requests to pick up others along the way may pose risks.

6. Avoid high-risk areas at night: Stay away from locations known for criminal activity.

 

He urged fellow drivers to remain vigilant, noting that experience and alertness can make the difference between safety and danger.
