“I Refused to Beg”: Hairstylist Shares Emotional Journey of Living, Working Through Painful Eye Condition

A Nigerian hairstylist has inspired many online after sharing her deeply personal story of resilience, passion, and survival despite living with a severe eye condition that disrupted her education and daily life.

In a viral video posted on TikTok, the young woman, identified as Suzy Lifestyle, recounted how her journey into hairstyling began at a very early age. According to her, what started as a childhood habit of braiding her younger sister’s hair gradually developed into a lifelong skill and source of income.

“I’ve always been inquisitive and eager to learn,” she said. “Any hairstyle I saw, I practiced it until I got better.”

Her passion followed her through primary and secondary school. However, her dreams of further education were cut short when her eye condition worsened. She revealed that she had enrolled in a National Diploma (ND) program but had to drop out as medical expenses consumed all her resources.

“All the money I had was going into treatment. I couldn’t focus on school because of the pain and my mental health,” she explained.

Beyond the physical discomfort, she described the emotional toll of living with a visible condition in public. According to her, daily outings often come with stares, pity, and unsolicited comments from strangers.

“People look at you, some say things to your face, some pity you. It gets to me sometimes—I cry,” she admitted.

Despite these challenges, she made a conscious decision to remain independent. Rather than resort to begging, she chose to build a career from her skill. She set up a small salon space in a hotel and continued to improve her craft by learning new styles and serving clients.

“I had to work. The least I want to do is beg because of my condition,” she said.

She also opened up about the physical strain her work places on her body, noting that while she may not feel pain when touching her eyes, she experiences severe headaches and eye pain, especially after long hours of work. In some cases, she said her condition worsens after a stressful day.

Her story also touched on personal relationships, including a failed romantic relationship she initially attributed to her condition. However, she credited her mother and close support system for helping her rebuild her confidence.

“My mom told me it’s not about the eye. People without any condition are still single. That changed my mindset,” she said.

Today, she describes herself as a strong and lovable person who has found purpose through her work and the encouragement of genuine friends and family.

Using her platform, she encouraged others facing difficulties to remain hopeful and keep pushing forward.

“Whatever you are going through, pick up the pieces of your life and move on. One day, it will be over,” she advised.
