A former staff member of a luxury apartment in Wuse, Abuja, has recounted the tragic death of his colleague, Genesis, blaming the incident on alleged staff neglect and poor welfare by the management.
In a detailed account shared online, the former employee, who worked as a Sous Chef at the facility, said Genesis — a mixologist in his mid-20s — collapsed at work after enduring prolonged stress caused by what he described as poor working conditions and understaffing.
According to him, Genesis was a hardworking orphan and the first son in his family who supported several dependants.
“Genesis was a very dedicated young man. He was soft-spoken, cheerful and loved by many staff members. Whenever he was off duty, his absence was felt in the bar section,” he said.
He alleged that the organization had been understaffed for a long time, forcing employees to work extended hours under intense pressure. Efforts by workers to raise concerns about the workload and welfare reportedly yielded no result.
The former worker said management had also stopped providing staff lunch in an attempt to cut costs, forcing workers to buy food outside the premises even during long shifts.
He claimed that during a staff meeting, management dismissed the complaints and warned employees that they could easily be replaced if they were dissatisfied with their working conditions.
Shortly after, Genesis reportedly collapsed at work and was rushed by colleagues to Wuse General Hospital.
The former Sous Chef alleged that the management abandoned Genesis at the hospital and left him to handle his medical bills.
A few days later, he said he also collapsed near the office after completing an overnight shift and was taken to the same hospital by a stranger who paid part of his initial medical expenses.
“When the office was contacted, the admin officer allegedly instructed staff not to visit me at the hospital, saying the organization did not have money to waste on hospital bills,” he claimed.
Although he later recovered and was discharged, he said the company asked him to resume work almost immediately. Instead, he resigned from his position.
He said Genesis remained hospitalized for weeks as his health deteriorated, while his family struggled to pay for diagnosis and treatment.
According to him, Genesis eventually died after months of battling the illness, with the company allegedly failing to provide support or attend his burial.
“The office was just two streets away from the hospital but they never cared. Sadly, his position was replaced even before he passed away,” he said.
The former staff member also revealed that during the same period, his wife was battling a serious illness at the Federal Medical Centre, Jabi, forcing him to spend all his earnings and sell personal belongings to cover her medical bills.
Despite the challenges, he said his wife eventually recovered and they are now rebuilding their lives.
Reflecting on the experience, he urged workers to prioritize their health and safety over any job.
“When your life, well-being and peace of mind are threatened, know when it is time to leave. Life comes first,” he said.
He concluded by paying tribute to his late colleague.
