Nigeria is set to pass the National Digital Economy and E-Governance Bill, positioning it among the first African nations to implement comprehensive AI regulation, with President Bola Tinubu expected to sign the legislation in the coming months.
The bill would grant the National Information Technology Development Agency sweeping powers to classify AI risks, mandate algorithmic transparency, and accredit auditors, as Nigeria’s digital economy is projected to reach $18.3 billion by 2026.
Communications Minister Bosun Tijani called the legislation a “catalyst” for Nigeria’s $1 trillion economic goal, with the digital sector already contributing 19% to GDP and infrastructure investments including 90,000 kilometers of fiber-optic network underway.
