Local Govt Chairman Presents N5billion 2026 Budget To House of Assembly

THE Chairman of Ede South Local Government Area of Osun State, Hon. Lukman Afolabi, has on Tuesday presented the 2026 proposed budget of the council to the Osun State House of Assembly.

The budget proposal has a total size of ₦5,750,039,310 (Five Billion, Seven Hundred and Fifty Million, Thirty-Nine Thousand, Three Hundred and Ten Naira) outlined key priorities aimed at economic empowerment and improved living standards for residents of the area.

The document shows that the entire projected inflow is expected from revenue sources, as no borrowing was proposed by the local government.

According to the estimates, total recurrent expenditure stands at ₦4,050,039,310 (Four Billion, Fifty Million, Thirty-Nine Thousand, Three Hundred and Ten Naira), while ₦1.7 billion (One Billion, Seven Hundred Million Naira) is allocated for capital expenditure.

A further breakdown of the budget indicates that ₦2,550,039,310 (Two Billion, Five Hundred and Fifty Million, Thirty-Nine Thousand, Three Hundred and Ten Naira) is earmarked for personnel costs. In addition, ₦1.5 billion (One Billion, Five Hundred Million Naira) is allocated to other recurrent non-debt expenditures. The capital component of ₦1.7 billion is expected to fund infrastructure projects and social interventions across communities in the local government area.

Presenting the proposal, Hon. Afolabi stated that the 2026 budget is designed to stimulate internally generated revenue in order to reduce dependence on federal allocation.

He explained that priority areas include the rehabilitation and construction of rural feeder roads, as well as the promotion of agricultural activities such as crop farming, poultry, and piggery to serve as both income sources and demonstration projects for local farmers.

Other objectives outlined in the budget include the construction, renovation, and stocking of public libraries to improve educational standards, continuous provision of free medicare through local government health facilities, and the implementation of skills acquisition and entrepreneurship programmes aimed at empowering youths and other residents.

The proposed estimates also emphasize improved security of lives and property, sustained access to potable water through regular maintenance and sinking of boreholes and deep wells, and increased public enlightenment to keep citizens informed about government activities while encouraging feedback.

Hon. Afolabi noted that the 2026 proposed estimates reflect the action plan of the current administration in Ede South Local Government and are geared toward inclusive development.

The Osun State House of Assembly received the budget proposal for legislative consideration as part of the process leading to its approval for the 2026 fiscal year.
