Former First Lady Aisha Buhari has clarified that late President Muhammadu Buhari passed away due to pneumonia, dismissing reports that he was poisoned.

In her new book, From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, she rejected rumours of air-conditioning sabotage or secret plots, describing such claims as distractions from real health issues.

Aisha Buhari explained that medical experts treating the former President informed the family that pneumonia was the cause of death.

She said that while media reports at the time speculated on various illnesses, including prolonged sickness or leukaemia, the family trusted only the doctors’ assessments.

She also addressed rumours surrounding Buhari’s 2017 illness, attributing it to fatigue, age, heavy workload, and a disrupted diet and rest routine.

According to her, his condition improved once stricter schedules and proper nutrition were restored.

Reflecting on her time in the presidential administration, Aisha Buhari said she focused on oversight and advocacy rather than official duties, clarifying that she did not sign documents or award contracts.

She recounted supporting the removal of former DSS Director-General Lawal Daura in 2018 after the National Assembly was blocked, which she described as unconstitutional.

Since leaving public office, Aisha Buhari has withdrawn from politics to concentrate on her family and philanthropic work.

She revealed that her foundation has set up a cardiovascular and medical centre in Kano, carrying out over 200 medical procedures.

She also ruled out remarriage, saying that trust, responsibility, and the demands of public life influenced her decision.
