News Update
Military authorities in Guinea-Bissau have declared that they have taken full control of the country, suspending all electoral activities and closing national borders.
The development comes just three days after the nation conducted its legislative and presidential elections.
Reports of heavy gunfire were recorded earlier on Wednesday around the presidential palace in Bissau.
Witnesses said soldiers in uniform moved to secure the main access road leading to the palace, increasing tensions in the politically fragile West African country.
The takeover was announced from the army headquarters in the capital, where senior officers read out a statement confirming the military’s control.
The statement outlined steps being implemented under the new administration, though details of the transition remain scarce.
International reactions were yet to be confirmed as diplomats and foreign observers monitored the situation closely.
