Suspected Indian hemp worth millions recovered

Sixty-six (66) parcels of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp were on Monday recovered by the operatives of the Gombe State Police Command after intercepting an unregistered vehicle along the Kuri–Deba Road.

DSP Buhari Abdullahi, the State Command spokesman explained that the operation was carried out by officers of the Deba Division around 9:30 p.m. on Monday

This was following “credible intelligence” received from surveillance operatives regarding the suspicious movement of unidentified men driving an unregistered ash-coloured Toyota Corolla.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, “the Divisional Police Officer immediately mobilised a team to the location upon receiving the information.”

He said that on arrival, their operatives sighted three suspects attempting to deliver the suspected illicit substance to an accomplice on a motorcycle, but that on seeing the police team, the suspects abandoned the exhibits and fled the scene.

He said the recovery of three bags containing 66 parcels of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp was made through a search of the area, stressing that the items have been taken into custody as investigations continue.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Bello Yahaya, according to Abdullahi, praised the swift response of the officers involved, pointing out that the operation reflects the command’s renewed commitment to tackling drug trafficking and other criminal activities in the state.

The Commissioner of Police believed that the recovery is a testament to their resolved to rid Gombe State of crimes and criminal networks.

He urged residents to continue providing useful and timely information to support police efforts, assuring that efforts have been intensified to arrest the fleeing suspects.

He stated that further updates would be provided as investigation progresses on the issue.
