BREAKING: Lagos to pay residents for recyclable waste

The Lagos State Government is inviting residents to turn household waste into cash as part of a renewed push to deepen recycling and keep the city clean.

It was reported that “Cash for Trash’’ is a long-standing initiative in Lagos under the state Environmental Protection Agency.

The waste-to-wealth initiative was created to allow residents to get paid in exchange for recyclable waste, thereby reducing the impact of climate change on the state.

In a statement and video via his X handle on Monday, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the scheme rewards residents every Thursday for bringing in recyclables.

Wahab said the Lagos Waste Management Authority’s Recycling Team is on the ground in Lagos Island, demonstrating how communities can convert recyclable waste into income.

The statement read, “Did you know your trash can turn into cash? Our #Lawma_gov Recycling Team is on the ground in Lagos Island, showing communities how to make it happen!

“We’re rewarding residents every Thursday for helping us keep Lagos clean and green. It’s a win for your wallet and a win for our city!

“Get involved and see the value in your waste.”

The accompanying video posted by the commissioner shows LAWMA agents weighing bags of sorted plastics on portable scales and disbursing cash rewards to participants.
