Soldier reportedly kills spouse, takes own life in Niger

A tragic incident at Wawa Cantonment, Niger State, has left residents in shock after a soldier allegedly killed his wife before taking his own life.

This was disclosed in a statement on Monday by its Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Stephen Nwachukwu, disclosed that Lance Corporal Akenleye Femi, serving at 221 Battalion, Wawa Cantonment, is suspected to have committed the act on Saturday.

“The tragic incident which occurred on 11 October 2025 at Wawa Cantonment, Niger State, has caused a tensed atmosphere, leaving the barracks residents in shock as to the circumstances that could have led to such unfortunate incident,” the statement partly read.

According to the Army, the bodies of Lance Corporal Femi and his wife were discovered in their apartment at Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters, within the cantonment.

Preliminary investigation indicated that the soldier had been on duty at the time and had sought permission from his superior to attend to personal matters before returning.

“The NA deeply regrets this, while it commiserates with the family, colleagues, and friends of the deceased over the painful loss.

“The army also prays for the peaceful repose of their souls,” Nwachukwu added.

The remains of the deceased have been preserved, and an in-depth investigation has commenced to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

‘’Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, Commander of the 22 Armoured Brigade, assured the public that the findings would be shared and further scrutinised, with measures implemented to prevent future occurrences,’’ Nwachukwu added
