News Update
Nigeria faces a crucial test this Friday against Lesotho, as part of matchday 9 of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The Super Eagles, currently third in Group D, need an absolute victory to stay in the qualification race.
Lesotho out of contention
Fifth in the group, Lesotho has nothing left to play for in these qualifiers. The team is coming off four consecutive defeats, failing to score a single goal and conceding 14. After a promising start, the Likuena completely crumbled in September, suffering a 3-0 defeat to South Africa and then a heavy 4-0 loss to Benin.
Nigeria feeling the heat
Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles know that any slip-up is forbidden. With 11 points, they trail the Benin-South Africa duo by three points. A win is therefore a must to keep their qualification hopes alive heading into the final matchday.
Unbeaten in their last three games, the Nigerians claimed a 1-0 victory against Rwanda before securing a 1-1 draw in South Africa.
