2027: “Jonathan, Peter Obi For PDP Presidential Joint Ticket”

News Update

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has disclosed that former President Goodluck Jonathan and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, are among the politicians the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is considering for its 2027 presidential ticket.

Speaking in an interview on Channels Television on Thursday, Mohammed said the PDP governors were already holding conversations with “celebrated politicians” across party lines, stressing that the opposition party was open to receiving heavyweights who could add value to its 2027 ambition.

Asked directly if the PDP governors were in talks with Obi, the Bauchi governor confirmed ongoing discussions.

“Have you not seen him in boats several times? Have you not seen him with me? He’s my brother, my friend. And of course, he’s one of the most celebrated politicians too. Within the coalition or outside it, we are not sleeping — only that we don’t make noise,” Mohammed stated.

He also revealed that he had spoken with former President Jonathan about returning to the presidential race on the PDP platform, recalling that he had once pledged to step down his own ambition if Jonathan decided to run.

“I was the first person to say that if he runs, I will not run. Maybe that’s one of the reasons why I said we should just go and sleep,” he said.

The governor further hinted at talks with other politicians, including former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, suggesting that a possible return of the ex-minister of transportation to the PDP could not be ruled out.

“Ameachi is free to come back if he wants to. I have spoken to so many people, not just him or Obi. These are only the key people I mentioned,” Mohammed added.

He stressed that the PDP was casting a wide net ahead of 2027, holding talks quietly with political figures who might be willing to return or align with the party.

According to him, “PDP is open to all those celebrated politicians who can come and add value to our presidential drive in 2027.”
