Poverty Is Not Godly: A Perspective on Comfort and Spiritual Growth

Poverty, a state of economic hardship, deprives individuals of basic necessities like food, shelter, clothing, and healthcare.

In my view, a certain level of comfort or prosperity is essential for spiritual growth and well-being. As the Yoruba adage goes, “Eni ebi n pa o gbo iwasu” (A hungry person doesn’t hear sermon). With basic needs met, individuals can focus on spiritual development, reflection, and personal growth.

Prosperity also enables generosity, fostering a sense of community and kindness. Having sufficient resources allows people to share with others, living a life of dignity. Basic comforts like food, shelter, and healthcare preserve dignity and self-worth.

It has been observed that many African societies face significant socio-economic challenges, including poverty, lack of access to quality education, and limited economic opportunities. These factors have contributed to a heightened reliance on spiritual or religious practices as a means of coping with adversity.

In most cases, religious leaders or groups sometimes using this influence to shape beliefs and practices in ways that may not always be beneficial to individuals or communities. This has led to a form of religious indoctrination, where critical thinking and autonomy are compromised.

Financial freedom can liberate individuals from religious excesses and mediocrity, allowing them to focus on genuine spiritual growth.

However, it is crucial to acknowledge that poverty is not a prerequisite for godliness. Many find spiritual depth in adversity, and some faiths emphasize simplicity, humility, and detachment from material wealth.

Ultimately, poverty hinders meaningful growth, whether spiritual or otherwise. It is by recognizing the importance of comfort and prosperity that we can strive for a more balanced approach to spiritual and social development.
