Osun-Osogbo festival: Police nab six suspected cultists, recover stolen phones

The Osun State Police Command has arrested six suspected members of the Aiye Confraternity for allegedly invading the Osun Mall in Osogbo with dangerous weapons.

In a statement issued on Monday by the command’s spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, the suspects were apprehended on August 7 by operatives of the Anti-Cultism Unit following a tip-off from a member of the public.

Those arrested include 32-year-old Olaosebikan Oriyomi, popularly known as “Yahoo,” said to be the leader of the group; 37-year-old Wale Adeyeye, alias “Mafia”; 33-year-old Olumide Olayemi; 23-year-old Omotayo Kehinde; 20-year-old Ajibola Damilola; and 18-year-old Yinka Oladipo.

Ojelabi said, “Upon receipt of the information, police detectives from the Anti-Cultism Unit of the Command swung into action and apprehended six suspects. Suspects confessed to the crime.”

In a related development, Ojelabi said operatives also arrested a 28-year-old man, Taiwo Akeem, on August 8 for allegedly stealing phones during the Osun Osogbo festivities.

“The following exhibits were recovered from him: two Samsung phones, one Infinix phone, one Vivo phone and one Tecno phone. Suspect confessed to the crime,” he said.

The spokesperson urged victims of phone theft during the festival to contact him to claim their property.

“The Commissioner of Police is using this medium to advise parents and guardians to rein in their wards to shun any form of unlawful society that will jeopardise their future.” the statement read.

The command added that all suspects would be charged to court upon completion of investigations.
