Popular Nigerian Mobile Network Changes Name

Telecom operator 9mobile has officially rebranded to T2, marking the start of a new phase in its corporate transformation.

Chief Executive Officer, Obafemi Banigbe, announced the change at a launch event in Lagos, describing it as “a total evolution” of the company’s identity, purpose, and service delivery.

“This is not just a logo change,” Banigbe said. “T2 reflects our renewed commitment to innovation, resilience, and exceptional customer experience as we position to thrive in the digital economy.”

The rebrand is part of a four-phase recovery plan — Stabilisation, Modernisation, Transformation, and Growth — initiated after Lighthouse Telecoms, led by investor Thomas Etuh, acquired 9mobile in 2023. Since then, the company has overhauled its board, appointed new executives, and signed a landmark infrastructure-sharing deal with MTN Nigeria, expanding coverage and network resilience nationwide.

Entering the “Transformation” phase, the company says T2 will focus on leading in digital lifestyle services, customer satisfaction, and technology-driven solutions.

Etuh described the change as a “fresh start” and thanked stakeholders, including the Nigerian Communications Commission and customers, for supporting the brand through its challenges. “We are rising together again. Together, we are reclaiming lost ground,” he said.

Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, welcomed the move, urging T2 to pair its new name with a stronger commitment to service excellence.

Lagos State Government, represented by Secretary to the State Government, Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, also pledged support, noting the alignment between T2’s vision and the state’s digital economy goals.

The rollout will be implemented in phases to ensure a smooth transition for existing customers while gradually introducing the T2 brand to the wider market.
