CAI4SR seeks implementation, protection of rights of persons with disabilities in Osun

THE Community Advancement Initiative For Self Reliance (CAI4SR) with support from Christoffel Blinden Mission (CBM) has called for the implementation, inclusion and protection of the rights of Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2024 in Osun state

CAI4SR, which stressed the need for equal opportunities in education, healthcare, and employment, urged the state government and private sector to take concrete steps toward inclusivity.

The Executive Director CAI4SR, Mrs Eni Ayeni, who spoke on Friday, during Bi-monthly awareness program on disability law and OPD, at the CAI4SR office in Osogbo, emphasised that it’s necessary for all citizens and residents of Osun state to understand the existence of the Osun state Disability law 2024 for guidance and protection.

“We are calling for the full implementation of the disability law in the state.

She noted that persons with disabilities, particularly those with psychically disabilities, face significant social stigma.

She highlighted the Foundation’s ongoing efforts to combat discrimination through awareness campaigns and strategic partnerships.

According to her, individuals with disabilities have the right to education, healthcare, and social inclusion, just like any other citizen.

Also, Mr. Stephen Olufemi, the state chairman of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPID) in Osun State, said while the law guarantees equal rights to all citizens, including those with disabilities, however, persons with disabilities often experience challenges, part is transportation system.

He, therefore, urged both governmental and private institutions to move beyond the traditional charity model and recognise these individuals as rightful citizens deserving of equal opportunities.

Also, Mrs Oluwaseyi Funmilayo, urged the Media to report good on persons with disability, “we are beautiful, handsome and intelligent people, we can do what other human beings are doing in life”.

While speaking on experience, a female Lecturer(Mrs Isola Omolola) JONAPID women coordinator, Mrs Omotayo Aderemi added that many persons with disabilities had been excluded from employment and social participation.

Mrs Oluwaseyi Funmilayo, urged the media and the government to actively support initiatives aimed at integrating persons with intellectual disabilities into the society.

In conclusion, the former Chairman JONAPWD, Mr Onitiju Kehinde encouraged the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) to engage persons with disabilities during the 2026 Osun state governorship election.

Key Provisions of the Osun state Disability law includes:

• Privisions of discrimination against PWDs in employment, education, and access to public services.

• Mandating accessibility standards for public buildings, transportation, and other other infrastructure to ensure PWDs can move freely and access essential services.

• Promotion of inclusive education, ensuring that PWDs have equal opportunities to attend school and receive quality education.

• Strengthening healthcare access, particularly for individuals with disabilities, by ensuring healthcare facility are equipped to cater to their needs.
