BREAKING: Kebbi begins Argungu solar-powered streetlights installation

The Kebbi State Government has commenced the installation of solar-powered streetlights in Argungu as part of its broader urban renewal programme aimed at enhancing infrastructure and promoting sustainable development across the state.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Hayatu Bawa Jega, disclosed this during an inspection tour of the project in Argungu, the headquarters of Argungu Local Government Area, on Friday.

According to the commissioner, the initiative is in line with the vision of Governor Nasir Idris to modernise major cities in Kebbi State and reduce dependence on the national power grid through the deployment of renewable energy solutions.

“This project is a significant step under the ongoing urban renewal programme of His Excellency, Comrade Dr. Nasir Idris. The solar-powered system is being adopted to replace the existing electric streetlights as a proactive solution to frequent power outages,” Jega explained.

He noted that a total of 282 existing poles in Argungu are being re-engineered and calibrated to accommodate solar panels and lighting units, describing the existing infrastructure as structurally sound and suitable for conversion.

Jega also referenced the successful implementation of a similar solar lighting project in the state capital, Birnin Kebbi, which, he said, had already transformed nighttime visibility and security.

“We are starting here in Argungu, and from here, we will extend the project to other urban centres across the state,” he added.

During the tour, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Yakubu Ahmed Birnin Kebbi, commended the quality of work and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to giving cities across Kebbi a new look.

“The solar-powered lights will enhance the beauty of Argungu, improve nighttime safety, promote social and commercial activities, and boost security,” he said.

He urged residents of Argungu to take ownership of the project and protect the infrastructure from vandalism.
