Tinubu Speaks Out on Bold Tax Reforms, Signals Hope for Economy

President Bola Tinubu has extended warm congratulations to Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, as he marks his 50th birthday on June 18, 2025.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the President lauded Mr. Oyedele’s distinguished career as a tax expert, accountant, and economist, praising his unwavering commitment to excellence, innovation, and national development across both public and private sectors.

Reflecting on Oyedele’s journey from humble beginnings in Ikare Akoko, Ondo State, to earning accolades at world-renowned institutions including the London School of Economics, Yale University, and the Harvard Kennedy School, President Tinubu described him as a “shining example of how merit, discipline, and integrity can propel individuals to global distinction.”

The President recalled Oyedele’s appointment as head of the Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee on August 8, 2023, noting that the committee was tasked with a bold mandate: to reform Nigeria’s fiscal framework, improve efficiency, and raise the nation’s tax-to-GDP ratio to 18% within three years.

“Though I am still awaiting the harmonised tax bills for assent,” President Tinubu said, “early results from the committee’s work are promising, with the tax-to-GDP ratio already climbing from 10% to over 13.5%.”

He praised Oyedele, who formerly served as Africa Tax Leader at PwC, for his strategic leadership in steering Nigeria towards a more equitable, simplified, and growth-oriented tax system.

The President also acknowledged his advocacy for tax relief measures targeted at low-income earners and reforms aimed at creating a more enabling environment for businesses.

As Oyedele reaches the milestone of his golden jubilee, President Tinubu expressed confidence in his continued impact—not just in policy, but also in academia and mentorship, particularly through youth-focused initiatives such as the Impact Africa Foundation.

The President offered prayers for Mr. Oyedele, wishing him strength, wisdom, and fulfilment in his ongoing service to the nation and humanity.
