Former Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Moses Thomas Sule, and 14 other former lawmakers have been arrested.
They were arrested on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Makurdi.
Their arrest followed allegations of money laundering and misuse of government resources during their brief time in office.
Reports from concerned citizens led to the arrest, accusing the former legislators of violating the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, and breaching procurement procedures.
Investigations showed that the group held office for only six months, during which the state government provided them with luxury vehicles worth N2.5 billion.
The vehicles were meant to serve as official cars but were not returned when the lawmakers left office.
Several attempts by the state government to recover the cars failed, forcing the procurement of a new set for the current House members, valued at about N2 billion.
The EFCC stated that the former Speaker and the 14 others would be charged to court soon.
