BREAKING: Nasarawa to enforce stringent rules after 186 arrested for violating sanitation laws

The Nasarawa State government has vowed to adopt stringent measures in the enforcement of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in the State. The Commissioner of Environment and Natural Resources, Princess Margaret Elayo made this known after sanitation exercise in Lafia, the State capital.

The taskforce led by the Commissioner apprehended 186 people for various violations of the rule. Most of those arrested were commuting across the state, despite the order to stay at home and clean their surroundings between 6am and 10am.

“We are going to sit with the team and we are going to strategize on what needs to be done. Today, I know there are sanctions on the ground, on what needs to be done for people found wanting. I think we need to do more awareness so that people will know the implications of going out during sanitation, a proper law will be put in place. I see no reason why, when it is just a once-in-a-month thing, you are asked to stay at home for two to three hours to clean up your environment and then you are on the streets, especially the bike riders. I saw a whole lot of them and the keke NAPEP riders. we are going on television to educate them. Next time I come out and I see that, we are going to arrest you, we are going to seize your vehicle and then proceed to the law,” Princess Elayo told reporters after the exercise on Saturday.

Princess Elayo who was undertaking her first sanitation assessment exercise as Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, said she made noticeable observation during the patrol. Among them is the need to provide incinerators and other bins for ease of refuse dispose and evacuation. This, she said will discourage littering waste on the streets.

She said the state’s waste management agency has been directed to mark and put signs in strategic areas where indiscriminate waste disposal is prohibited.

She also noted that efforts are in motion to prevent the adverse effects of flood in the State. Such actions, she revealed, include provision of temporary shelters for the use of people living in flood-prune areas. “We are preparing sites that people can go stay when this crisis is ongoing. For our people, their problem is leaving their premises. But when government says leave, you should leave, your land is not going away. We won’t a problem of a property being destroyed. But we will have a problem losing lives. And that is why we are putting strategic things on ground before it commences, where we know there is going to be heavy rains. There are places we are going to communicate your stakeholders, local government area chairmen to relocate you. pick one or two items that you can carry and leave the house so that you will not be affected. When the rainy season is over, we will see what we can do in terms of the property,” the commissioner said in reference to people living in flood disaster areas.

The Commissioner disclosed that her team visited the State-owned waste recycling site to ensure that plastics are not littered but properly harnessed for reuse.

She said partnership arrangements are in top gear with an association that deals in water marketing, to properly sensitize their members on the contributions of plastics to the climate crises.
