Protests rocks Abuja
Protests have erupted in Abuja, with youths gathering at various locations, including a branch of GTBank, demanding the release of Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan.
The protests have led to disruptions, including roadblocks in several areas.
VeryDarkMan, a prominent Nigerian activist and social media influencer, was arrested on May 2, 2025, following an incident at a GTBank branch in Abuja.
He allegedly complained about unauthorized deductions from his mother’s bank account, which led to his detention.
His arrest has sparked widespread outrage among his supporters, who view it as an infringement on free speech and a targeted attack on activism.
In response to his detention, protests have intensified, with demonstrators calling for his immediate release.
EFCC Says Social Media Activist VeryDarkMan Arrested Over Multiple Petitions, To Be Charged Soon
The EFCC, speaking through its spokesperson Dele Oyewale, told BBC News Pidgin on Monday that the activist was taken into custody following complaints from several petitioners.
“We arrested him to respond to a series of allegations raised against him by some petitioners,” Oyewale said.
When asked if the case was connected to Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB), Oyewale noted that the petitions were from different individuals and the agency owed them a duty of protection.

He stated, “We will release him when he meets the bail conditions and we will take the case to court as soon as possible; we are law-abiding.”
