JUST IN: Lagos Taskforce shuts down major drug hotspots, arrests 20 in explosive raid

In a major crackdown on illicit drug activities, the Lagos State Environmental Taskforce raided several notorious dark spots across Gowon Estate, arresting 20 drug peddlers and seizing illegal substances during a high-stakes operation yesterday.

The team targeted key locations known for the sale and use of illicit drugs, including the infamous 31 Rd intersection, Wole Omo-Osho and Idoani streets, as well as the Egbeda market area along Egbeda-Idimu Road.

According to the Lagos Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab on his X handle, during the operation, the Taskforce successfully dismantled makeshift stalls located at the Idoani Street junction, which had become hotspots for criminal elements to freely sell and consume illicit substances.

He said discreet intelligence had flagged these areas as unsafe havens used by drug dealers, some coming from as far as neighbouring regions.

Wahad disclosed that a range of illicit drugs, along with cash proceeds from the illegal trade, was recovered.

The operation, which has been hailed as a significant success, underscores the government’s unwavering commitment to combating drug abuse and restoring safety to affected communities.

“These locations had long been known to serve as hubs for drug activities, and we have taken decisive steps to end that. The safety and wellbeing of our citizens remain paramount,” he said.

The commissioner stated that the arrested individuals, who are facing charges related to drug peddling, will be swiftly processed and brought to court for further legal action.

This latest operation is part of the Lagos State Government’s continuous efforts to clamp down on criminal activities that endanger public safety and tarnish the reputation of thriving communities.
