THE United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has announced plans to cut 20% of its global workforce due to a $58 million budget shortfall, with Nigeria and nine other countries among those to be affected.

OCHA’s Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Martin Griffiths, in a briefing to staff, said the cuts follow a significant reduction in funding from its largest donor, the United States.

“OCHA currently has a workforce of around 2,600 staff in over 60 countries. The funding shortfall means we are looking to regroup to an organisation of around 2,100 staff in fewer locations,” he stated in a memo.

The agency, which coordinates international humanitarian response, relies largely on voluntary contributions.

According to the memo, the U.S. had been OCHA’s biggest donor, contributing $63 million annually, roughly 20% of its extra-budgetary funding.

Griffiths said the agency would reduce its presence in Cameroon, Colombia, Eritrea, Iraq, Libya, Nigeria, Pakistan, Gaziantep (Turkey), and Zimbabwe.

“These decisions are driven by funding cuts announced by Member States and not by a reduction in humanitarian needs. Humanitarian needs are increasing, fueled by conflict, climate-related disasters, disease outbreaks, and widespread violations of international humanitarian law”, he noted.
