Osun: Amotekun Arrests Ex-Convict for N1.3m Wire Theft

THE Osun Amotekun Corps has once again demonstrated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property with the arrest and conviction of a 25-year-old ex-convict, Adebayo Afeez, for stealing electricity wire valued at N1.3 million in Ila-Orangun.

Afeez, an indigene of Iragbiji, was apprehended on Monday, April 7, by operatives of the Ila Command following a prompt response to a distress call from vigilant residents. He was caught while attempting to flee the scene, while his accomplice escaped.

The suspect, who has a previous conviction for drug-related offenses, confessed to the theft during interrogation, according to the Corps Commander, Dr. Hon. Adekunle Isaac Omoyele.

“Our swift response and the timely information from residents led to his arrest. Community cooperation remains crucial to our operations,” Dr. Omoyele said.

According to the press release by Corps signed by Yusuf Idowu, the corps emphasized its resolve to rid the state of criminal elements and urged continued public vigilance.

Afeez was arraigned on Friday, April 11, before Magistrate A.A. Adeyeba at Magistrate Court 1 in Osogbo. Prosecutor Oyedele F. Akintayo, representing the Osun State Attorney General’s office, filed a two-count charge. The accused pleaded guilty and was sentenced to six months on the first count and one year on the second, with both sentences to run concurrently.

“This conviction sends a strong message to would-be criminals that crime will not go unpunished in Osun State,” Dr. Omoyele added.
