JUST IN: Police warn against unauthorised hiking, camping in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has cautioned members of the public, particularly youth groups and hiking enthusiasts, against embarking on camping and hiking activities without notifying security agencies.

In a statement on Tuesday, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Ajao Adewale, emphasised the security risks associated with such outings, particularly in remote and unsecured locations.

“The FCT Police Command advises members of the public, especially youth groups, organizations, and hiking enthusiasts, to take necessary precautions before engaging in camping and hiking activities,” the command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, stated.

She added, “The Commissioner of Police, CP Ajao S. Adewale, stresses that organizers must inform the police before embarking on such activities. Failure to do so poses significant security risks, as remote locations are often vulnerable to criminal activities.”

Adewale underscored the need for proper coordination with law enforcement to ensure safe routes and adequate security arrangements.

“The Command urges organizers to liaise with the police to obtain guidance on safe routes and ensure all participants are accounted for throughout the activity,” he said.

He further advised that effective communication with law enforcement before and during such activities could reduce safety risks and enhance emergency response.

The police urged residents to report suspicious activities and seek security coverage by contacting the FCT Command through its emergency lines: 08032003913, 08061581938, 07057337653, and 08028940883.
