FULL TEXT: Rivers Assembly reacts to Tinubu’s emergency rule in State

News Update

THE Rivers State House of Assembly has reacted to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in the state.

Speaker Martin Chike Amaewhule, speaking on behalf of the Assembly, stated that they would abide by the President’s decision, even though it was not what they had requested.

The lawmakers accused the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara of being responsible for the crisis, saying his repeated disregard for court rulings and unconstitutional actions led to the current situation.

They claimed he obstructed the Assembly from performing its duties, which worsened governance in the state.

Amaewhule assured Tinubu that the Rivers Assembly would fully support the Sole Administrator appointed to lead the state.

He pledged that the lawmakers would provide any assistance required to help the administrator carry out his duties effectively.

The Speaker urged the people of Rivers to stay calm and support the new leadership.

He also thanked them for their prayers and understanding, encouraging them to cooperate as the state moves forward under the emergency rule.

Meanwhile, reports reveal that Governor Siminalayi Fubara is reportedly being held under house arrest at the Government House in Port Harcourt.

According to People’s Gazette, a contingent of heavily armed soldiers has surrounded the premises, restricting the movement of the governor and his family.
