The Cross River State government has decided to establish three distinct electricity power agencies.
These are the Cross River State Electricity Regulatory Commission, CRSERC, for independent regulatory oversight, the Cross River State Electrification Agency, CRSEA, which will extend reliable power to underserved communities, and the Cross River State Independent System Operator, CRSISO.
This resolution was reached today at an emergency State Executive Council meeting presided over by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Peter Odey, following the approval of a presentation from the Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, for a state-owned electricity policy document.
The State Electricity Policy provides a comprehensive roadmap aimed at overhauling the state’s energy framework by introducing a competitive market model underpinned by robust institutional structures.
The Deputy Governor, who represented the Governor, disclosed that the electricity policy seeks to transform the state’s power sector.
He further explained that the policy has an ambitious target to achieve 95% electricity access in the state by the year 2028.
He stated that the policy will bridge the energy divide by scaling up power generation capacity.
He also explained that it will enhance transmission and distribution efficiency while promoting rigorous consumer protection and energy efficiency.
