5 weeks public holiday declared for Ramadan

News Update

THE Bauchi State government has ordered the closure of all schools across the state for five weeks in observance of the 2025 Ramadan fast.

According to the approved school calendar for the 2024–2025 academic session, the holiday will run from March 1 to April 5.

Confirming the development on Friday in Bauchi, Jalaludeen Maina, Information Officer of the State Ministry of Education, stated that the break had been scheduled well in advance.

He clarified that the directive applies to all educational institutions in the state, including public and private primary, junior secondary, senior secondary schools, and higher institutions of learning.

“Yes, we are closing all our schools and this is included in our 2024-2025 approved calendar for the academic session that our students are not going to do the Ramadan fasting while in school.

“The five-week holiday is for Ramadan fasting and immediately after the fasting, they will resume and continue with their academics,” he said.

However, some parents in the state have expressed concerns over the decision, fearing it could negatively affect their children’s academic progress.

One frustrated parent criticized the duration of the closure, arguing that a five-week break was excessively long and could disrupt learning.

“Why would Ramadan break be too long like this? The children may have even started forgetting what they had learned before the break,” she said.

A concerned Muslim parent urged the state government to reconsider the decision, warning that an extended break could contribute to the growing issue of out-of-school children.

Another Muslim parent, expressing discontent over the development, reminded the government that Bauchi already ranks among the states with the highest number of out-of-school children.

He stressed the need for initiatives that would encourage school enrollment rather than policies that might discourage parents from sending their children to school.
