News Update
THE Court of Appeal sitting in Akure, Ondo State, has reinstated the elected local government council chairmen and councillors who were sacked by Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State.
In a judgment delivered on Monday, the court ordered the immediate resumption of office of the council officials, all of whom are members of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Meanwhile, the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) has filed an appeal against the Appeal Court judgment.
Upon assuming office in November 2022, Governor Adeleke had dismissed the local government officials following a High Court decision that had earlier overturned their election.
The High Court had sacked the council officials after their election, which had been organized by OSSIEC. The Osun State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other political parties had approached the High Court to challenge the council elections.
They argued that the election was a nullity because only APC candidates contested vacant positions, and the available options for voters were either “YES” or “NO.”
