Oyo commander: NDLEA arrested 546 suspects, secured 46 convictions in 2024

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Oyo State Command, arrested 546 suspects for alleged involvement in illicit drug activities between January and December 2024.

The NDLEA Commander, Mr. Olayinka Joe-Fadile, shared the update during a press briefing on Thursday in Ibadan, the state capital, highlighting the command’s achievements over the past year.

“The suspects arrested comprised 449 males and 97 females, aged between 12 and 80 years,” Joe-Fadile disclosed.

According to the commander, the arrests stemmed from the possession and trafficking of narcotics, including cannabis sativa, tramadol, cocaine, pentazocine injections, and cannabis-laced cakes.

Joe-Fadile revealed that 66 cases were taken to court, resulting in 46 convictions. Additionally, the Command seized 10,444.538kg of cannabis sativa and other psychotropic substances within the year.

“The command destroyed 1.420093 hectares of cannabis sativa farmland in Iyalode and Ogunmakin villages in Akinyele Local Government Area, amounting to a total of 3,550.2kg of cannabis destroyed,” he stated.

The commander also reported the recovery of firearms, including one pistol with two magazines, a locally fabricated single-barrel gun, and 20 live cartridges.

Beyond enforcement, the NDLEA made strides in rehabilitation.

“The command rehabilitated 18 individuals who were reintegrated into society and counselled 144 persons during the year,” Joe-Fadile added.

He assured all that the agency would continue public sensitisation efforts on the dangers of illicit drug trafficking to create a drug-free Oyo State.

Commending residents for their support, Joe-Fadile urged for continued cooperation to ensure the state remains safer and crime-free.
