JUST IN: Borno Govt bans street hawking

The Borno State Urban Planning and Development Board (BSUPDB) has banned street hawking and other illegal activities in Maiduguri metropolis.

 

This was contained in a statement issued by the General Manager of the board, Limán Mustapha, on Friday in Maiduguri, the state capital.

 

Mustapha said the ban was in accordance with the Borno State Urban Planning and Development Law of 2002.

 

According to him, the board prohibited street hawking, the operation of tricycles, and generator repair activities around the Post Office and Monday Market areas of Maiduguri.

He added that the board also banned any activities on pedestrian walkways, junctions, and roundabouts, as well as the sale of engine oil on road reserves, the dumping of sand or building materials, and the mixing of cement on roads. Additionally, the construction of boreholes by roadsides was prohibited.

 

The General Manager further stated that those affected by the order had been asked to vacate the occupied sites with immediate effect.

 

“The board has no alternative but to arrest and prosecute defaulters in a court of law.

 

“This measure aims to ensure a clean, safe, and organized urban environment in Maiduguri and other parts of the state,” he said.

Mustapha urged residents and business owners to comply with the ban to avoid legal action.
