Ekiti Government Empowers Trained Persons With Disabilities Through Vocational Training, Equipment

News Update

THE Office of Disability Affairs, in collaboration with the Office of the Special Adviser on Special Education and Social Inclusion, has graduated and empowered 40 vocationally trained persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Ekiti State to make them self-reliance and economic independence.

The ceremony, held at the Skill Acquisition Centre in Ilokun, Ado-Ekiti, was a testament to the state government’s commitment to inclusivity and skill development.

The graduates, trained in five specialized fields, including Shoe Making, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Cosmetology and Hairdressing, Catering and Hospitality, and Tailoring and Fashion Designing—received essential tools and equipment to kickstart their careers.

The Chairman of the Board of Disability Affairs, Dr. Ogunlade Ebenezer, encouraged the graduates to focus on their abilities rather than societal perceptions.

He emphasized, “If one can aspire to be a veterinary doctor, each of you can excel in your chosen career,” urging them to pursue their dreams with confidence and determination.

Also, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Education and Social Inclusion, Princess Adetoun Agboola, reaffirmed the state government’s support for PWDs and announced that the beneficiaries would be part of a financial assistance programme scheduled for January 2025.

She lauded Governor Biodun Oyebanji for his unwavering commitment to the welfare of PWD communities.

“If anyone claims Governor Oyebanji is not doing anything for PWDs, do not listen. His work speaks for itself, and he remains dedicated to empowering the PWD community, ” she said.

Princess Agboola also expressed gratitude to Hon. Peju Babafemi, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, for her steadfast support, and to Mr. Adeyemi Akinlabi, Director of the Skill Acquisition Centre, for his pivotal role in the programme’s success.

She advised the graduates to use the equipment for its intended purpose and to apply the knowledge gained during their training.

In her remarks, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Peju Babafemi underscored the importance of synergy between her ministry, the Office of Disability Affairs, and the Office of the Special Adviser, noting that such collaboration ensures tangible results for all disability clusters.

She urged the beneficiaries to maximize the opportunities provided, regardless of how modest they might seem.

In his welcome address, the Director of the Skill Acquisition Centre, Mr. Adeyemi Akinlabi identified the need for sustainable systems to promote inclusivity.

He reflected on the rigorous training the graduates underwent, which included foundational soft skills and industrial exposure to prepare them for self-sufficiency.

Contributing, the Chairman of Ado Central Local Council Development Area, Engr. Toyin Ojo, who was recently recognized as the best PWD-friendly chairman in Ekiti during the International Day of PWDs, pledged to replicate similar empowerment programmes in his constituency.

Engr. Ojo inspired by Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s passion for the PWDs, reaffirmed his commitment to uplifting people with disabilities in the state capital.

Some of the beneficiaries including Mr. Ife Abejide, an ICT graduate who received a laptop, and Mrs. Fasoranti Ruth, who was provided with catering equipment, praised Governor Oyebanji, Princess Agboola, and other stakeholders for the life-changing opportunities.

They expressed optimism that the equipment would significantly enhance their services and crafts.

As a gesture of appreciation, the beneficiaries presented gifts to the governor, acknowledging the administration’s pivotal role in their journey.

The event concluded with a renewed sense of hope for an inclusive society with the graduates, now equipped with skills and tools, preparing them to embark on new journeys, contributing to the development of a more empowered and equitable community in Ekiti State.
